10 Fan Theories That Make Comedies Really Depressing

2. The Big Lebowski – Donny Isn’t Real

Walter Sobchak’s sidekick Donny is a man of few words – so few, in fact, that it makes you wonder if he’s even really there at all. At least according to some Big Lebowski fans who posit that Donny is actually a figment concocted by the warped, PTSD stricken mind of Vietnam vet Walter.

The evidence? Throughout the movie barely anybody acknowledges poor Donny directly and though The Dude does seem to converse with Donny a few times he could easily be humouring his mate Walter by entertaining his imaginary friend as real.

This poses the question of why bother holding a clifftop funeral for a man who doesn’t exist but again this could be The Dude indulging his friend’s delusion. Or it may be the case that hanging around with an unhinged Vietnam veteran combined with the copious amounts of weed he smokes has gotten to him and he’s started to believe Donny is real too.

Either way, shut the f**k up Donny.
