10 Fan Theories That Make Comedies Really Depressing

4. The Breakfast Club – Saturday Detention Is Purgatory

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off isn’t the only John Hughes film to find itself on the receiving end of the fan theory treatment. Its predecessor, The Breakfast Club – a coming-of-age comedy about a group of teens stuck in Saturday detention who form a bond despite their differences and high school social hierarchies – is about to get as depressing as hell too.

According to fan legend, the angst-ridden teens actually die offscreen and find themselves in purgatory (i.e. Saturday detention) where they must repent for their sins by revealing their deepest secrets to each other before they can move on to the afterlife.

Even worse, the afterlife is apparently exclusively sound tracked by the Simple Minds’ Don’t You (Forget About Me) which isn’t a very comforting thought for those of us averse to living out our eternal lives to a constant backdrop of synth-pop.

Damn, that John Hughes has a dark, dark mind.
