At first, Steven Spielberg was reluctant to accept the role of director for Jaws, but he surely feels good about his decision now. He actually tried to step away from filming at first, but his attempts were vetoed by Universal Studios, and he stayed on.

Filming had its ups and downs, but sometimes it managed to get to the director. As the budget doubled - and then tripled - and shooting went on for a bit longer than planned, Spielberg was prepared to say goodbye to his career as a filmmaker. This was only his second time shooting his own movie, and he thought it would be his last.

It is rumoured that he would go to sleep with a stalk of celery under his pillow as he found the scent comforting. Apparently, this strange hack involving a vegetable worked because he managed to pull it together and make it through the filming process and produce a fantastic film. Spielberg got his beauty sleep, and viewers around the world got to watch a suspenseful masterpiece. Who knew success smelt like celery?
