10 Fascinating Facts About Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs

2. It's The First Animated Film To Receive An Academy Award

It’s hard to believe that with all the phenomenal animated films that have been released over the years, that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences only introduced the Best Animated Feature award in 2002 (for the films released in 2001). Just imagine all the films to receive their just rewards had the category been introduced earlier.

Now we have to come to peace with the fact that The Boss Baby was nominated for Best Animated Feature, and Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid aren’t (yes, they got music awards but that’s not representative of the whole feature).

That said though, at the 11th Academy Awards in 1939, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was given an honorary Oscar. Or rather, Walt Disney was for creating Snow White, for it being an innovation in cinema and revolutionising the medium by being the first feature length animation (which as we’ve established, it’s not). At the ceremony, child star Shirley Temple presented the award to Walt Disney, which had one large statue and seven small statuettes, one for each of the dwarfs.

Interestingly, at the 10th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Original Score, going up against 14 other films, including Best Picture winner The Life of Emile Zola, and lost to One Hundred Men and a Girl. This marks the only time where a single film was recognised at two separate Academy Award ceremonies. Little bonus fact there.
