These days, Friday the 13th fans have to rely on indie video games to get their Jason fix because the masked killer is showing no signs of escaping development hell.

The 2009 reboot marked a fresh start for the slasher icon, reestablishing him as Crystal Lake's resident slaughterer after Freddy vs Jason brought the original series to a close, along with Nightmare on Elm Street. While it was a financial success, plans to sustain the character's revival have only disintegrated.

A sequel was thrust in and out of development hell for a while before plans for a second reboot pencilled in for October this year came and went, and it's a similar story concerning The CW's attempt to resurrect Jason on the small screen.

It comes as little surprise the Friday the 13th revival efforts have run out of steam. Appetite for slasher films in general has waned of late and the Jason movies were low on creativity even during the genre's heyday.

Unless there's a slasher revival in the next couple of years - which could potentially happen if next year's John Carpenter-backed Halloween sequel is any good - Friday the 13th is at risk of becoming a forgotten franchise.
