10 Film Franchises That Are Officially In Jeopardy

5. Ghostbusters

The biggest problem with last year's Ghostbuster's reboot was that it wasn't good enough to silence its critics, fans who will never forgive Sony for reimagining the property instead of giving them Ghostbusters III.

Despite laudable efforts from a stellar cast, the movie felt disjointed, the humour mostly missed the mark, and above all, it didn't feel like Ghostbusters.

The reboot polarised opinion like Marmite and debates over its quality often descended into insanity, but the take-home point is that it wasn't the kind of critical and commercial smash that warrants sequels, spinoffs and a cinematic universe.

Sony clearly had a franchise in mind with the repackaged Ghostbusters, hence the post-credits sting, but the series is in dire need of a return to the drawing board.

An animated movie, said to play out from the ghosts' perspective, is in the works at the studio, and the fresh thinking it's already demonstrated could go a long way to restoring confidence in a tarnished brand.

Another live-action movie disconnected from the Paul Feig film is expected to follow, but given that it took more than two decades to get a third Ghostbusters off the ground, the fans should be worried.
