10 Film Sequels That Made Fans Rage Quit

2. Batman Forever

The Riddler Batman Forever
Warner Bros.

Warner Bros ditched Tim Burton after a backlash to the tone of Batman Returns, with parents feeling it was too dark and perverted for children. They replaced him with Joel Schumacher, who immediately caused Michael Keaton to walk away in disgust by asking “Why does everything have to be so dark?”

So he turned the franchise into a campy, garish nightmare, allowing Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones to ham up a storm. It was basically a toy commercial masquerading as a movie, which lead to it becoming a huge hit. The backlash was swift and brutal, though, with fans lashing out at everything from the Batsuit nipples to the Batmobile driving up a wall.

Fans burned by Forever stayed far away from Batman & Robin, and toxic reviews ensued everyone else did too. The next sequel was canned, and a few years Christopher Nolan came along to wipe the memory of Schumacher’s era away.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
