10 Film Sequels That Made Fans Rage Quit
1. Highlander II: The Quickening
This is a prime example of smothering a promising franchise before it had a chance. To be fair, crafting a Highlander sequel was always going to be tough, since the original ended with MacLeod winning the game and killing the other immortals; in short, the story was done.
It turned a healthy profit, though, so a terrible script was tossed together that retconned the original completely. It turns out the immortals were alien exiles from a distant planet, and in the sequel an alien general insists on killing the now mortal MacLeod – for no real reason – causes his immortality to return. He also resurrects Sean Connery’s mentor by screaming his name; it’s completely bananas.
The film is ugly, boring and nonsensical, and fans of the original left the cinema utterly disgusted with it. The Quickening regularly tops lists for worst sequels ever made, and subsequent Highlander follow-ups bombed.
