10 Film Sequels That Were Better Than The Originals

8. Gremlins 2: The New Batch

gremlins2 While Gremlins satirized the typical "terrorised small town" cliché, Gremlins 2 took them to New York to cause all sorts of havoc in the big city. By causing havoc- we can only assume that Billy hasn't observed the rules of owning a Gremlin, yet again. They multiply in a skyscraper in New York and would pose a serious health hazard if they were to escape the building. This time around the film is more of a slapstick comedy than its predecessor, often parodying other films such as The Wizard of Oz and Rambo. It even breaks the fourth wall at times, such as having a cameo appearance by film critic Leonard Maltin. He holds up a copy of the original Gremlins video and rips it to shreds, just as he had in reality; however, his rant is cut short when the Gremlins pounce on him. Another memorable fourth wall-breaking moment occurred when it appeared the Gremlins had taken control of the film, with it fizzling out and the Gremlins creating shadow puppets, only to be persuaded to start the tape again by Hulk Hogan. The sequel was allowed to take on this more cartoon-like quality due to director Joe Dante wanting complete and total control over the film, so naturally he inserted a lot of things that would really annoy Warner Bros. This also annoyed some fans in the process, but taking it down this route widened its appeal to a broader audience.
