10 Film Subplots Infinitely Better Than The Main Story
4. What The World Forgot - Yesterday
The 2019 film Yesterday may be one of the most creative film premises in recent memory. After a power outage, struggling musician Jack discovers that he is the only person on Earth who remembers the Beatles. He takes advantage of their absence, passing their decades old hits as his own music.
As the film progresses, we learn that the Beatles aren't the only pop-culture icon that's vanished: Also gone are cigarettes, Coca-Cola, Harry Potter, and Oasis (the band, the waterlogged places in deserts seem to be fine). However, rather than develop any of these, they're simply used as a punchline, asking more questions than they answer.
Though the Beatles should still have most of the focus, these other forgotten entities deserve a little more focus than they get. How each of their absences affects the world has so much story potential, but all of that potential is wasted as smaller jokes.
