10 Film Subplots Infinitely Better Than The Main Story
2. FN-2187 - The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
While the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy gets far too much hate, they made the crucial mistake of forgetting about Finn's origins.
The first half hour of Force Awakens made fans believe the new sequel trilogy would be about a Stormtrooper who turned on the First Order. The plotline humanized the soldiers, who, more often than not, were utilized as cannon fodder rather than characters. When FN-2178, aka Finn, watches his friend die and refuses to fire on innocents, it makes fans think twice about who these Stormtroopers really are.
However, after Force Awakens, Finn's past becomes more like a piece of trivia than a subplot. It's never mentioned in Last Jedi, and only comes up briefly when Finn meets other Stormtroopers who have left the First Order. Even these troops don't think twice about firing at Stormtroopers, throwing any sophistication this plotline had out the window.
While Rey is a great character, we've already seen a Star Wars trilogy about a desert-planet-nobody-turned-Jedi. A reformed Stormtrooper lead would have been uncharted territory for the franchise.
