10 Filmmakers Who Defended Their Terrible Movies
6. Anne Hathaway Says The Haters Just Didn't "Get" Serenity
Not to be confused with the infinitely superior Firefly continuation from 2005, Anne Hathaway's Serenity was one of the worst movies of 2019, a truly baffling effort that clearly thought it was way cleverer than it actually was.
Kicking off the year with a disappointing whimper, the movie received a critical pummelling when it launched in late January, which resulted in Hathaway speaking up and fighting for its honour.
Coming out with a much more level-headed response than The Lone Ranger filmmakers did, Hathaway simply stated that some critics "get" Serenity, and some of them don't. Furthermore, she brushed off its failure as a learning experience, and reinforced her love for the film - even in the face of such fervent opposition:
"We keep it real around here: some critics get Serenity and, like me, find it interesting, moving, ambitious and different, and for some it just doesn’t work. That’s cool - there is no failure, only learned events, not everyone has to like everything, and the critical response doesn’t change my feelings about the movie."
It was a passionate defence no doubt, but all Hathaway got for her troubles was a Golden Raspberry nom for Worst Actress. Umm... yay?
