10 Critically Panned Films That Will Be Future Classics
8. MacGruber
You've got to give the makers of MacGruber credit for getting a ninety minute long film out of a sixty second SNL skit. MacGruber, a spoof of action-adventure TV show MacGyver, was savaged by critics when it released in 2010 and it has a positively rotten score of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. Will Forte was singled out in particular for his portrayal of the titular hero with Catherine Bray at Film 4 writing that:
"Leading man Will Forte will make you pine for the graceful savoir faire of a Jack Black or an Adam Sandler."
Hardly a ringing endorsement but when looking at the reviews of MacGruber you can't help but feel like some critics are taking the film WAY too seriously. After all, this is a film where the main character sticks some celery up his ass and dances around to distract the villain. MacGruber also underperformed at the box office, grossing only $9m worldwide on a $10m budget, with the negative reviews obviously not helping the film's cause. When MacGruber is funny, it's very funny (try and not laugh at the 'Broken Wings' sex scene) and in years to come it's not hard to imagine that the film will have the reputation of Airplane! or the Naked Gun series.
