10 Critically Panned Films That Will Be Future Classics

9. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

Fans of the Twin Peaks TV show were desperate for some closure given the open-ended nature of the series' ending. The announcement of a Twin Peaks film seemed to signal that it would be was forthcoming. Only the film was a prequel, revolving around the last seven days in the life of Laura Palmer, who turned up dead in the show's pilot episode. The film also lacked Sherilyn Fenn and Lara Flynn Boyle, while Kyle McLachlan's role as Agent Dale Cooper was severely reduced as the actor was frightened of being typecast. This wasn't the Twin Peaks film that fans or critics wanted to see. When the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival is was greeted with jeers and boos and was subsequently torn apart by critics. Morbid, joyless, self-indulgent, self-parody: yep, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me was called everything under the sun and failed at the box office to boot. But was the film really that bad? While it's certainly different from the show, it does offer an altogether new, more frighteningly surreal experience - David Lynch just went against the grain of horror film's from that period. The film already has a cult following and, with Twin Peaks set to return to screens in 2016, hopefully fans will go back and revisit this often misunderstood film.
