10 Films Directors Wanted You To Hate
1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
[Beleaguered sigh] Okay, you knew this one was coming. Regardless of whether you liked or didn’t like Rian Johnson’s 2017 entry into the Star Wars series, we should all agree that we hate how much people have come to argue over it. Johnson made some radical changes to beloved characters, among them are Haggard Luke Skywalker, Mary Poppins Leia, and he even made Chewie learn to think without his stomach? Blasphemy!
Someone unearthed a video of Johnson while making his first film, Brick, in which he stated:
I would be worried if everybody across the board was like ‘yeah, it was a good movie’ it’s much more exciting to me when you get a group of people who are coming up to you who are really, really excited about it. Then there are other people who walk out literally saying ‘it’s the worst movie I’ve ever seen.’ Having those two extremes is the mark of the type of movie that I want to make.
With this in mind, Johnson is the kind of guy who likes movies that don’t just check off all the boxes to ensure everyone is satisfied. Heck, this entire list has been about filmmakers who consciously made films to give people something other than they are used to. If you look back, chances are you like some of these movies. The final point being, The Last Jedi is a film that tried to challenge the audience.
When filmmakers try to please everyone we end up getting something like The Rise of Skywalker.
