10 Films Directors Wanted You To Hate
8. Rubber
Rubber is the story of a crusty old tire lying in the Southern California desert who bolts upright and discovers that it is alive! Not only that, but it can make things explode with its, er, mind?
This transgressive take on slasher film tropes came out in 2010 to baffled and yet delighted audiences. French director and techno musician Quentin Dupieux’s film challenges tropes of genre while also making meta-commentary about how movies “poison” their audiences. The story of the tire is merely a story-within-a-story, as an audience stand out in the desert and watch the tire stalk its prey—through binoculars?
If none of this makes sense to you, that’s because it isn’t supposed to. Rubber’s intention (aside from watching heads explode) is for the viewer to question the purpose behind viewing film, ultimately coming to its own conclusion that film is a pointless art form. Watch Rubber only if you are in the mood to be trolled.
