10 Films Inspired By Real Life Events (That Never Actually Happened)

2. The King Is More Midsummer Night's Dream Then Medieval History

So whilst the Battle of Agincourt definitely happened, and Henry V of England was definitely a very real King, claims that the eponymous film is based on real-life events is still inaccurate.

The reason? Netflix's The King is a Shakespeare adaptation and a very, very loose one at that.

This in itself is a giant problem, as all parts to The Bard's tetralogy were hotly debated and criticised by historians when they were first performed, and that was nearly 500 years ago during the 16th century.

The most obvious of historical liberties concerns the films ending plot-twist revealing the origins behind the Anglo-Franco conflict that dominates most of the film. It is fair to say that a Game Of Thrones-style plot involving one counsellor manipulating his leader into invading another country was definitely not the motivation behind resuming hostilities during the Hundred Years War.

Whilst it would have been an option for Netflix to have made a more historically accurate film about Henry V, not even Bill Shakespeare ever let such a small thing as history come between him and telling a grand old tale, and adapting his work would have probably seemed a far simpler task.

Until you actually read all four parts to the dammed thing that is.
