10 Films That Risk Being 2015's Biggest Box Office Failures
6. Mortdecai
The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise turned acclaimed character actor Johnny Depp into one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, not to mention one of the highest paid. Since then, the actor's track record hasn't been the greatest and he has starred in a number of critical and commercial disappointments that have left him in dire need of a box office hit. By all accounts, Mortdecai is not going to be that movie. One of the main criticisms of Johnny Depp over the last few years has been his penchant for playing caricatures instead of characters; the Pirates Of The Caribbean sequels, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger and Transcendence have seen the actor use the same tired schtick that involves a combination of dodgy accent, crazy makeup and even crazier wig, sometimes all three. Based on the footage that we've seen from Mortdecai, it looks like Depp is sticking to his tried-and-tested formula in what looks like a lightweight and ultimately forgettable romp. Although the movie features a solid supporting cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany and Jeff Goldblum, David Koepp doesn't have the strongest commercial track record as a director (Secret Window, Ghost Town, Premium Rush) and the R-rating and release date in the cinematic dumping ground of late January could see the movie flop at the box office, putting another dent in Johnny Depp's box office credibility in the process. Not ideal for what Lionsgate has envisioned as a potential franchise-starter.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
