10 Films That Risk Being 2015's Biggest Box Office Failures

7. San Andreas

Self-styled 'franchise Viagra' Dwayne Johnson has seen his presence boost the Journey, G.I. Joe and Fast and Furious franchises to new heights of box office success, but despite being one of the most likeable stars in Hollywood the actor is yet to headline a blockbuster of his own. Re-teaming with his Journey 2 director Brad Peyton, San Andreas gives Johnson another opportunity to headline a big-budget studio release after last year's disappointing Hercules. However, there is every chance that the upcoming disaster movie could disappoint at the box office. The first trailer was underwhelming to say the least and opted for a somber and deadly serious tone, an unusual move for an effects-laden popcorn flick starring one of the industry's most charismatic actors. The trailer also inadvertently made the movie look like a carbon copy of Roland Emmerich's 2012, except on a smaller and more contained scale. While that movie earned almost $770m at the box office, it benefited massively from Emmerich's track record with disaster movies and a November release date that provided little competition. Unfortunately, San Andreas' May 29 release falls right in the middle of a packed blockbuster schedule, which could really hurt the movie's chances of success. While Age Of Ultron will be in its fourth weekend by then, the first Avengers earned $36m during the same frame and the sequel will likely wind up a bit higher. Spy and Tomorrowland are both released a week before San Andreas, and the following weeks bring Jurassic World, Pixar's Inside Out, Ted 2, Terminator Genisys and Ant-Man. If the marketing remains as generic and forgettable as it has been and reviews are less than favorable, San Andreas could become lost in the shuffle amongst more established competition.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
