2016 looks set to be the year that definitively answers a question that’s been doing the rounds for decades: is it actually possible for a film based on a video game to be an unqualified success? Even ‘pretty successful’ would be a huge step up (and no, Angry Birds doesn’t count). Assassin’s Creed will arrive in December for a second bite at that hitherto poisonous cherry but first comes Warcraft, Duncan Jones’s long-long-awaited adaptation of the world’s best-known MMORPG.

Jones arrived to great fanfare with the rightly celebrated Moon in 2009 and followed up solidly with Source Code two years later. Pretty much ever since, he has been toiling away behind closed doors to bring the unwieldy fantasy world of Warcraft to the big screen; an odyssey that will finally end when the movie arrives in theatres in June. Reactions to the trailers have been somewhat mixed, though the in-built market of the games franchise’s loyal devotees should be enough to ensure, at a minimum, modest success.

Should the film prove to be a slam dunk on its opening in June, however, there’s no telling how big the numbers could get, even if a pretty formidable fish will be swimming in the same waters not long after Warcraft’s release...
