10 Films That Could Join The Billion-Dollar Club In 2016
7. Finding Dory
Despite a production line of successful, cherished films that’s only occasionally threatened to malfunction, Pixar’s only member of the billion-dollar club to date is Toy Story 3. The second biggest earner? Finding Nemo. The charming 2003 tale may have been about a lost clownfish but it devoured its box office rivals like a greedy shark, eventually pulling in almost $900 million on first release; it remains one of the highest-grossing animated films ever made.
No pressure then, Dory. Finding Nemo’s memory-challenged MVP who will this time take centre stage as she embarks on a quest to learn more about the life and family she can barely remember, with Marlin and Nemo in tow and friends old and new to encounter along the way.
Even if some moviegoers have taken issue with Pixar’s increased reliance on sequels over time (Toy Story 4 could well turn out great, but that doesn’t mean it ought to exist), it’s impossible to conceive of Finding Dory being anything other than an enormous hit. A billion-dollar hit? More than likely, yes. Toy Story 3, Frozen and Minions (spot the odd one out) are the only animated movies to cross that threshold thus far, and, while the superb Zootopia threatened, it didn’t quite manage to do the same. Dory has every chance. If only she’d remember it.
