10 Films That Creepily Predicted 2016’s Biggest Moments

6. Bastille Day (2016) - The Nice Terror Attack

One of the most shocking and tragic events that took place in this crazy year was the attack at Nice when 86 people were killed and hundreds more injured after a man driving a 19-tonne lorry ploughed into crowds celebrating France’s national holiday, Bastille Day. Less than a year after the devastating terror attacks in Paris, the country was once again plunged into three days of national mourning while reports abounded that ISIS were claiming responsibility for the attack.

In a strange twist of fate the tragedy was mirrored in an Idris Elba fronted movie, also named Bastille Day, that was released in France just a day before the attack took place.

In the movie, an American conman in Paris finds himself unwittingly embroiled in a terrorist attack designed by a group of mercenaries to take place on the national holiday and act as a decoy while they embezzle half a billion dollars from a bank, while Elba’s CIA agent runs around shooting a gun and uncovering details of high-level corruption.

Of course, there are major differences between the movie and the Nice attack. Bastille Day’s villains are corrupt police and politicians and its attacks are an inside job, whereas the real events were perpetrated by a radicalised Tunisian-French resident who despite ISIS’s claims of responsibility currently seems to have been working largely alone.

Nevertheless the film, which had already been delayed from earlier release dates in Europe in the wake of the Paris terror attacks, was pulled from French cinemas a few days following the events at Nice out of respect for the victims of the attack.
