10 Films That Make You The Bad Guy
3. Mulholland Drive
To even attempt to explain Mulholland Drive would not only be a Sisyphean task, but it would ruin the viewing experience for anyone who hasn't seen it. All we'll say is that if you haven't already seen David Lynch's surreal neo-noir Hollywood mystery nightmare vision of a film, we highly recommend going in blind and watching it without knowing anything about it beforehand.
In one of the most memorable and out-of-nowhere scenes of the film (which is saying something, given that every scene in Mulholland Drive is memorable and out of nowhere), a mysterious cowboy torments Hollywood director Adam Kesher. After giving him instructions, he ends his speech with an ominous warning: "you will see me one more time, if you do good. You'll see me two more times, if you do bad."
We never know for sure how many more times Adam sees the Cowboy, but we as an audience definitely see him pop up in the background two more times. That can only mean one thing: we have done bad.
What bad thing did we do that's upset the Cowboy so much? That remains unclear. You'd have to ask David Lynch himself, and good luck ever getting a definitive answer out of him.
