David Lynch was never a fan of the extended version of his 1984 sci-fi epic Dune. He generally likes his movies to be abstract and ambiguous, but the longer edition was undeniably closer to the original Frank Herbert novels.

The expanded TV edit poured filler into the film's narrative cracks and also added a clarifying dose of characterisation, but most importantly, the in-depth literary lore that was missing in the cinematic cut was restored.

The end result isn't just a superior movie, it's actually a Dune movie, one more likely to inspire viewers to seek out Herbert's literary work.

Fans have been clamouring for a Dune sequel since the '80s, but had to make do with the Frank Herbert's Dune and Children of Dune mini-series instead, the former of which also has a director's cut, incidently.
