10 Films That Only Make Sense If You See The Director’s Cut
8. Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko's story of wormholes, time travel and the apocalypse hits you like a bullet to the head the first time around, but those who caught the director's cut were spared some of the brain trauma.
Richard Kelly's indie classic confused as much as it compelled but the longer version, which included an additional 20 minutes of footage, filled in the gaps between some of its weighty, metaphysical concepts.
It was almost as though Kelly deliberately destroyed some of the movie's connective tissue to boggle the viewer's mind, because the restored footage slots in like missing puzzle pieces and even removes some of the mystery.
The Donnie Darko director's cut also came bundled with a supplementary booklet on time travel which further explained some of the concepts at play.
Armed with this info and the additional scenes, it actually makes perfect sense.
