10 Films That Retconned Themselves (To Fix Glaring Mistakes)
3. Scream 3 – Roman’s Plans
A decade before Hayden Panettiere and Rory Kulkin saved the franchise with the belated Scre4m, the original trilogy was capped off by Scream 3. And what a send-off it was!
Missing the screenwriter of the first two movies, Kevin Williamson, who had moved onto bigger and better things (like er, Teaching Mrs. Tingle), the third film wasn’t content to simply disappoint audiences with smug meta-jokes and warmed-over jump scares. No, Scream 3 went the extra mile and tacked on a killer who had—surprise!—engineered the murders of the first two movies as well as the third!
Wait, hang on. How could that make any sense?
Wasn’t this killer was busy establishing himself as a director whilst also coaching two teen serial killers, a movie buff college student psycho, and one of the teen’s grieving mothers? It may seem laughably unlikely, but anything is possible when the screenwriter ignores continuity in favour of trying to justify the existence of another instalment.
