showgirlsBudget: $45 million Box Office: $20,350,754 What was meant as a smart and edgy adult film turned out to be a trashy, poorly written box-office debacle. The first widely released NC-17 rated movie Showgirls was primed to pave the way for more adult oriented features. Too bad the movie was little more than a poorly-written skin flick. Showgirls should have broken new ground, and pushed cinema forward in its opening up of new story avenues. Instead it flopped, losing a good chunk of money and causing studios to shy away from the dreaded NC-17 rating.
