10 Films That Suffered In The Editing Room
5. Suicide Squad
The controversy surrounding the release of the DCEU's Suicide Squad in 2016 was plastered onto many a tabloid by the time the flick debuted onto our screens.
A lot of this was down to the madness that was reported to have gone down whilst shooting, with Jared Leto going full-method and delivering gifts of rats (among other things) to his co-stars. Yet, even more of a stir was created by the actual content that was presented to the fans in cinemas - or lack of in this case.
The studio (Warner Bros.) initially made a big song and dance about this film being a grungy dark journey into the world of some of DC's eclectic villain-turned-anti-heroes. But, when Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (we'll get there) was panned for its overly serious/grim tone, WB quickly scrapped those plans and chose to remarket the film as a sparky tongue-in-cheek dark comedy.
This sudden change of direction was evident in the finished article, as the film felt like the amalgamation of two conflicting styles and came across as disjointed because of it.
After the studio had stripped all editing control from David Ayer - in the process of creating this monster which fans eventually had to be subjected to - they went one worse and cut out the majority of Leto's scenes as The Joker, despite the character being the focal point of most of the marketing in the build-up.
There's a fantastic untouched Suicide Squad movie and Jared Leto Joker performance out there somewhere, it's just a shame that we were lumbered with this studio-ruined mismatch of a feature instead.
