10 Films That Would Make Great TV Shows
2. Clerks
One of the most popular cult films to have emerged from the 90s, Kevin Smith's Clerks embraced the life of a slacker by giving us a hilariously pop culture-tinged exercise in doing sweet nothing and loving it. After the impressive second outing, with Dante and Randal getting up to no good in a fast food joint, a third film has been brewing for what seems like forever. And Clerks fans will have even longer to wait as Kevin Smith has decided that his Mallrats TV spin-off is an endeavour more worthy of his present time.
But what if a third Clerks movie was completely abandoned and instead replaced with a television series?
Clerks has already been attempted for television twice. Back in 1995 a pilot was made, idiotically without Smith's or any of the original cast's involvement. Smith saw the pilot and declared it to be awful, and thankfully it didn't see the light of day. Next up was the animated series, which thankfully did involve Smith and the original cast. However, even though it was a critical success, it struggled to find an audience and was canned after a single season.
Perhaps the above points to one seemingly simple solution - a live-action Clerks sitcom, involving Smith as the writer, with the entire original cast (and perhaps even characters from the second movie) all returning. The beauty of Clerks is the fact that, within a conventional narrative at least, it is essentially about nothing, which means a show would have the freedom to do anything. The comedic possibilities would be endless, and the series would be perfect for a Netflix binge-fest.
If Smith finds success and enjoyment from his upcoming Mallrats TV show, then it wouldn't be a huge surprise if he decided to give Clerks the TV treatment once again. Hopefully the third time's a charm.
