10 Films With Amazing Casts That Should Have Been SO MUCH Better
9. Mars Attacks!
Cast: Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVitto, Pierce Brosnan, Natalie Portman, Glenn Close, Annette Benning, Michael J Foxx, Jack Black, Tom Jones What It Could Have Been Expectations were this would be a self-consciously silly sci-fi romp, with a string of funny cameos from some of Hollywood's best acting talent - the cast list above is just the tip of the iceberg with this film; unbelievably, there is even more A-list talent on display than the cast list above suggests. With Tim Burton at the helm, audiences could rightly have predicted the B-movie look would be handled effectively, and that the film would include plenty of Burton's trademark macabre-isms. The Reality On paper, that's exactly what the film offers, but after a watching it, there's something deeply unsatisfying. It seems Mars Attacks! gets away with so much because of the B-movie pastiche it hides behind. Roger Ebert got it right when he said 'a movie like this should be a lot better, or a lot worse'. The fact is, the film sinks under the weight of its acting talent, and Mars Attacks! fails in its self-conscious attempt to become a cult classic because it isn't good enough and isn't stupid enough either. It was asking a lot to get Tim Burton and the incredibly varied and talented cast to make a 'bad movie' on purpose. What we get instead is a collection of 3 minute cameos which range from serviceable to distracting from A-list heavyweights, up-and-coming talent, and random celebrities.
