No genre has experienced so much self referential content as horror. Sometimes it works brilliantly, sometimes less so (just because you’re pointing out horror tropes, doesn’t mean you’re making Scream).

One film that takes the final girl concept somewhere genuinely interesting is the underrated post-modern slasher You Might Be The Killer. We take a familiar setting - a summer camp - and a cosily familiar masked killer, and from there, things get a lot more interesting.

Our final girl here is Jamie (Jenna Harvey), who is in every way the trope’s archetype. So much so, in fact, that she becomes the object of envy for the other characters. She's so clearly designated the final girl that her mere presence means that others surely won't survive - unless they kill her first.

It's remarkable that a film found a new twist in the post-modern horror subgenre, and the idea of a "prophesied" final girl is a fascinating one. There's a sequel tease involving another character. but Jamie's status as a survivor who by nature dooms others is far more interesting for further instalments.
