10 Foreign Movie Rip-Offs You Won't Believe Actually Exist
2. Aatank (1996) - Jaws - India
Man's head in top right corner not to scale.
For some reason, India waited 20 years before they decided to rip-off Jaws, presumably because they wanted to wait for America to stop ripping it off first, and that period - as you're no doubt aware - went on for a long, long time. Or, at least, it appeared that way - Aatank was shot at some point in the '80s, but it didn't get released until 1996, for reasons that I doubt we'll ever know. Aatank makes a crucial mistake, though: it mostly emulates Jaws 3. Bad move, India. If the thought of watching a cardboard fin moving through the water excites you, this movie is for you. Is it called Aatank because it sounds like "a tank," a coy reference to the ending of the original flick, where Brody uses an oxygen tank to blow up the shark? Absolutely not. Anyway, this movie is plainly nuts, although the finale - which nicely emulates the out at sea portions of the first movie - is insanely brilliant and bloody as hell. A man genuinely stabs a trident into the shark as it leaps overhead! Also there are random dance sequences, 'cause India.
