6. The Terminator - The Conclusion To The War Against The Machines
TriStar PicturesThe Terminator franchise should have ended with Terminator 2: Judgement Day. It was bigger, bolder and more badass than its predecessor and delivered a satisfying conclusion to the storyline introduced in The Terminator. It wasn't a film that demanded another sequel. But a sequel we got. Two of them in fact, neither of which felt connected. Now we're about to be served a reboot. If you're going to continue on from Terminator 2, turning it from an epic victory into a tragic tale, at least have the decency to finish the story. Instead we have what equated to a remake of Terminator 2 with a female T-1000 and an interesting but ultimately soulless attempt at expanding the futuristic war against the machines, without giving it a definitive conclusion. Now we have the latest trend in Hollywood; the time travel sequel-prequel-reboot. It worked for Star Trek because there was no ongoing narrative still to tell. But the story begun in The Terminator isn't finished yet. Unless you choose to ignore Rise Of The Machines and Salvation completely... which is a valid choice. Redoing Terminator with the Doctor and Daenerys might be a complete success. But it doesn't take away from the fact that we haven't got the conclusion the current franchise so badly needs.
