After director Wes Craven helped define the slasher genre with A Nightmare on Elm Street, he teamed up with screenwriter Kevin Williamson to deconstruct everything that had gone before with the Scream movies. Seems like a lot of effort, but his gamble paid off, resulting in one of the most successful horror franchises of all time. Neve Campbell stars as Sidney Prescott, the small town girl who is forced to fight for her life when the masked serial killer Ghost-Face attacks and kills her friends on the anniversary of her mother's death. Sound familiar? Well, yes and no. Prescott may be the typical "final girl" in many ways, but as the series develops, she becomes both stronger and more self-aware, coming close to breaking the fourth wall in her perception of events. As the inspiration behind Anna Faris's Scary Movie parody and the survivor of four consecutive films, Prescott is one of the heavyweight champions of horror and therefore deserves to come first in the final girl stakes. Also, Craven cheated and let Prescott have sex yet still survive to the end. Score! I want to know what you think though. Does Prescott deserve the top spot or is there another more deserving 'final girl'? Let me know if I've missed any out who you think deserve a mention!
