10 Found Footage Movies That Are Actually Worth Your Time
5. Trollhunter
The name of this movie alone tends to get eye rolls, but if you can move past the fact that 99 percent of movies with the word "troll" in the title are exceptionally awful, you might be pleasantly surprised by this Norwegian horror-comedy.
The initial premise isn't groundbreaking: A group of college students venture out into the woods to investigate mysterious, unexplained killings. The setup is basically the Blair Witch Project if you replaced the unseen witch with gigantic, in-your-face trolls. (The actors even improvise most of their lines, just to cement the comparison.) But that doesn't do justice to how unique this movie turns out to be.
Comprised of government scandals, traditional Norwegian folklore, pristine landscapes, dry humor, and even a few genuine scares, Trollhunter achieves what, on paper, seems impossible: Making the idea of a government conspiracy to cover up the existence of actual, monstrous trolls plausible.
Seriously.
The internal logic of the film is flawless, and every time you'd want to point out just how impossible an onscreen event is, here comes an outpouring of rationale that not only justifies, but actually strengthens, the troll mythology. It's nothing short of a miraculous feat by the director.
Trollhunters is truly a one-of-a-kind movie.
