10 French Horror Movies You Need To See

2. Revenge

Possession Film
Neon

A rape revenge story that turns the genre on its head, Revenge does what it says on the tin, strapping a rifle to its face and popping off shots at the exploitation genre by twisting it entirely on its head.

Jen and her wealthy boyfriend enjoy themselves in his remote holiday home near the desert, spending quality time together before his two friends show up unannounced and crash their party. Jen is attacked, and the three men deem it easier to kill her than let her story come out - resulting in a game of cat and mouse that transforms Jen from victim into survivor.

What makes Revenge so great as a horror movie is that it takes the stance of Jen, and indeed all women, as the lens to view the film through. We're shown the perspective of this narrative truly from a female gaze - with lingering shots on men, and the initial attack itself never being drawn out. That, and it's a fine example of action and horror coming together in harmony.
