10 Fun Horror Movies You Need To See

9. The Cabin In The Woods

Tucker & Dale
Lionsgate

Another tongue-in-cheek entry into 2010s horror, this Drew Goddard-helmed motion picture took the idea of deconstructing tropes in the well-worn genre and relished in doing so, without tearing down what makes horror resonate with many audiences.  The story follows a group of college students who take a trip to the eponymous location and unwittingly fall into a social experiment that quickly devolves into chaos.

The engineers behind the experiment employed the use of drugs, mind-altering substances, and unusual objects to throw the students into disarray, and fulfill the ritual of appeasing the Ancient Ones, a group of powerful but vengeful entities who reside beneath the Earth's surface.

Like the previously discussed Tucker and Dale vs Evil, the 2011 picture plays with the horror genre tropes, and uses its witty screenplay to poke (or like its characters, eviscerate) the genre's expectations. What this creates is a cinematic experience that relishes in cliches and is further powered by strong performances and some of the best practical gore and creature effects in the genre.
