2. Igor - Young Frankenstein

Peter Venkman
Twentieth Century Fox

It takes a lot to upstage Gene Wilder but if there's one man who could do it, it was the legendary comedy performer and double BAFTA winner, Marty Feldman.

Feldman was hugely popular in the UK with his TV work but achieved global stardom after starring as Dr. Frankenstein's wide-eyed assistant, Igor in Young Frankenstein. In this 1974 comedic masterpiece written and directed by Mel Brooks, Igor has the most laughs as the dimwitted sidekick. He constantly breaks the fourth wall, messes up Frankenstein's plans and then there's also the case of his hump that mysteriously keeps moving from one side of his back to the other.

Although Feldman steals the show, I can't write about this film without mentioning the incredible Oscar nominee Madeline Kahn who plays Dr. Frankenstein's fiancee and of course, Peter Boyle the all-singing, all-dancing, abnormal brained monster. Needless to say, Mel Brooks is a genius and he has written countless hilarious films but you won't find a better testament to his work than watching Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman slowly discover that Igor had accidentally put an abnormal brain into a 7 foot corpse, thinking it belonged to someone called Abbie Normal.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
