Weekend at Bernie's features one of most outrageous concepts in comedy film history, due to the fact that the film's main character is dead!

Larry and Richard are workers at Bernie Lomax's insurance firm. When the two stumble across insurance fraud in the firm's accounts, Bernie invites them to his mansion in the Hamptons, unaware that Bernie is the person behind the fraud. Before Bernie can silence the two whistleblowers, he himself is killed, resulting in the boys' absurd plan to pretend that he is alive so that they can enjoy a weekend at Bernie's.

Whilst the story of a lifeless corpse being propped up by two hapless yuppies was dismissed by critics, the film has since become a cult classic amongst comedy fans.

Making $30 million at the box office, a sequel was released in 1993, but repeating the magic of the original was always going to be a difficult task. Both the audience and critics agreed that the second film was comedic equivalent of beating a dead horse - or in this case, beating a dead Bernie.
