10 Funniest Non-Monty Python Films From Monty Python Members

7. Jabberwocky

Terry Gilliam's first directorial work outside of the Pythons, yet another medieval satire called Jabberwocky, isn't as funny or interesting as the films that came before and after it. It isn't as jam-packed with snappy banter and outrageous set pieces as The Holy Grail, and it's not as immersive and gleefully dark as Time Bandits.

And yet, it's impossible to call this a bad film, or even a mediocre film. It only seems mediocre if you decide to watch this as part of a Gilliam marathon, where it's surrounded by the kind of genius that makes you question exactly what your overall worth is on this planet.

Loosely based on Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem of the same name, Jabberwocky isn't concerned with creating any sort of dramatic tension between the rube, Dennis - the quintessential Michael Palin role if ever there was one - and the mythological beast that he must slay.

One scene in particular, where Palin's eventual torture is interrupted by a group of disappointed sadomasochists, feels like one that was mistakenly left on the cutting room floor during The Holy Grail editing process. Luckily for us, there are plenty of scenes like that to be found here, which makes up for much of its flimsiness.
