10 Funniest Non-Monty Python Films From Monty Python Members
6. The Wind In The Willows
You might expect a family-friendly, live-action adaptation of a children's novel centering around anthropomorphic animals to be a bit, how shall I say, "outside" of the typical Python fans' wheelhouse.
But make no mistake, this un-animated take on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is still quite spirited. Buoyed by the indelible Steve Coogan - a man who can do nothing wrong onscreen - and four Pythons - the most assembled for any movie on this list - The Wind in the Willows stands head and shoulders above the usual children's dreck that was being churned out in the 90s. Mostly because it's actually funny.
It's also a more sophisticated final product than, let's say, Life of Brian or The Holy Grail, mostly because the script elegantly balances the charm of a children's fable with the caustic wit of an Orwellian cautionary tale.
The idea of legendarily funny comedians playing dress up might not inspire much confidence - in fact, I'm sure some of you are reliving the downfall of Eddie Murphy in your own headspace right now. And when you imagine Eric Idle singing whilst caked in makeup, you expect an oddly cheerful song about sperm, which would seem rather out-of-place in a children's movie such as this.
But fear not, The Wind in the Willows is both a gentle comedy that enchants, and also a pointed satire that delights the more cynical portion of the heart.
