Kirstie Alley is a name that turns up frequently on Star Trek lists. She appeared in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, in 1982. Originating the role of Saavik, she seemed to be ideally placed as a replacement for Spock when, at that time, audiences were convinced the veteran Vulcan wasn't going to survive the film.

Although audiences were technically right (spoilers for a forty-year-old film), Alley did not return for the sequel. There is a little bit of he said/she said to the story, but it seems to be a fact that Alley's agent demanded a fee that would have eclipsed DeForrest Kelley's. Leonard Nimoy, who was directing Star Trek III, felt this was ludicrous, and negotiations failed.

Robin Curtis came in to take over the role and Alley moved on to other projects. She appeared in Cheers, and also had a starring role in the Look Who's Talking franchise. She would headline the show Veronica's Secret. Alley has been a spokesperson for promoting weight loss methods and products for several years.
