10 Gaping Plot Holes That Will Ruin Your Favorite Movies

3. Identity Issues - Toy Story

Toys have psychological issues. If you can get to grips with this entertaining, yet potentially disturbing premise, then Toy Story is the kids movie for you. Rex is neurotic as hell, Woody is painfully insecure and Jessie has some serious abandonment issues, but all of that pales in comparison to Buzz Lightyear's existential crisis. Despite belonging to the hugely popular Space Ranger toy line, Buzz refuses to believe that he's just a child's plaything. Cue hilarious gags where Buzz contacts Star Command with a fake communicator and shoots blinky flashing lights in Woody's eyes. The problem with this premise is that as soon as a human enters the room, Buzz freezes in place and even allows himself to be picked up like a toy. Wouldn't a brave Space Ranger try to fend off such a threat if he really thought he was marooned on a distant planet? During the press tour for Toy Story 3, director Lee Unkrich suggested that Buzz plays possum when humans appear because of an innate mechanism built into every toy, but this suspiciously feels like a theory cobbled together in hindsight. Wouldn't it be disturbing if Buzz really was a Space Ranger whose psyche was destroyed over the course of three movies, until he finally gave in to the overwhelming psychological pressure and convinced himself he was a toy? Goddamn those Pixar sickos!
