10 Geekiest DVD Commentaries Every Film Fan Must Listen To

5. Roger Ebert - Citizen Kane

Roger Ebert

Roger Ebert wasone of the few film critics who was routinely asked to provide movie commentaries for DVDs - that was the breadth of his reach and understanding of film. In the commentary he recorded for Citizen Kane, Ebert distinguished it as one of his favourite films, noting that,€œWhenever I am asked what the greatest film of all time is, I always sayCitizen Kane,€noting that it "is so inventive, so fresh every time you see it, so new, that I never get tired of seeing it."

Ebert had seen the film dozens of times over his lifetime, and so it's fair to say that he was one of the film's devoted experts by the time he sat down to give the commentary.

Ebert's commentary operated much like his written criticism; informative yet never elitist or overly intellectualised. You could even dislike the film and probably take something interesting away from what he had to say.

Perhaps the most telling indication of the commentary's significance is that it itself has had a commentary given by panelists at Ebert's annual EbertFest.
