4. Independence Day - Welcome To Earth
Come on this had to be here right? Apologies to those of you that like this film but I never have. Much like the Star Wars prequels, the issues in this film have been talked to death but there is no forgiving the fact that a an alien race were defeated by a laptop. It is arguable that the most famous moment in this film is the depiction of the White Houses destruction-but there is another moment-and that is what is on the list. The moment in question is of course the one in which Will Smiths character Captain Hiller punches an alien pilot that he manages to bring down in the Grand Canyon. Following an alien invasion the earth has been thrown into chaos, Hiller lead his squadron in attack on an alien ship only to see his team easily defeated. Hiller himself manages to survive and brings down an enemy fighter pilot; he then approaches the fighters plane and knocks it out with a single punch. Of course this moment is ludicrous; somehow Will Smith manages to take down a thing that by rights should absolutely destroy him, but who cares? This is a dumb movie and there is no denying that but this is dumb fun opposed to the just plain dumb that would come with the rest of the film. This moment exemplifies everything that this movie should, be a raw and human reaction to a unworldly threat, it is man against beast. It is a shame that the rest of the film got lost in its overblown American nationalism and the idea that human technology could take down a far more technologically advanced alien enemy.
