10 God-Awful Horror Films (With Amazing Kills)
7. Army Of The Dead
Yes, Army of the Dead is all over the place. Yes, it has too many sub-plots with zero pay-off. And yes, the camera is never in flippin' focus.
But it's impossible not to commend Zack Snyder's zombie thriller, since it has some of the coolest dismemberments and decapitations we've ever seen. The opening sequence probably has more innovative deaths than any horror film over the last decade.
Because Army of the Dead has a final tally of 300+ onscreen deaths, you'd assume you would be pretty desensitised by it all after a while.
But the film avoids this trap, since many of these executions are surprisingly emotional. It's heartbreaking when Scott is forced to drive a knife through his wife's skull. It's deeply satisfying when Martin is shredded by the zombie tiger. And when an undead straggler gets crushed by the safe's booby trap, you can't help but laugh.
Although it's hard to pinpoint the best kill, the way Maria goes out stays with you. While she secures the safe, a zombie twists her neck with such force, the top of her spine pops out of her clavicle.
