A haunted house movie in space? What's not to love?

Event Horizon follows the crew of a spaceship on a rescue mission to investigate the seemingly impossible return of a ship from a black hole.

Films about the horrors of space are a dime a dozen - they're basically their own sub-genre now. Rarely however do we see ones as unapologetically bleak and brutal as Event Horizon.

While a solid bit of the horror comes from its nightmarish imagery, mainly toward the third-act when all hell literally breaks loose, it's in the movie's concept where much of the terror lies. Space is inhospitable, we all know that, yet we still keep pushing ourselves to venture deeper and deeper into its void.

What Event Horizon does is serve to remind us that maybe the universe is not for us to explore, and by essentially playing god in trying to do so, we are opening ourselves up to infinite horrors beyond our imagination. Space may be the final frontier left for us to traverse, but it may possibly be better left to itself.

Smart and spooky, Event Horizon is undeserving of its unfortunate critical reputation.
