Who would have thought that Frodo could be so terrifying?

In Maniac, a vicious killer falls in love with a young woman and must battle his murderous instincts if he hopes to live a normal life.

This day and age making your horror remake feel original is a hard task. There's just so many of them that they almost blend together at this point. So, the question arises of how do you make yours feel fresh. The answer? Film the whole thing in first-person.

What could have easily come across as a cheap gimmick instead not only makes Maniac feel distinct, but makes the gruesome violence feel all the more up close and personal. When Elijah Wood's character kills someone, it's as if you are in his shoes, complicit in his murderous actions. This style of filmmaking blurs the line between viewer and voyeur, forcing us to question our motives in even watching a movie such as this to begin with.

Maniac uses its extreme violence and first-person camera work to create an experience just as thought provoking as it is horrifying. It may not be for everybody, but that doesn't justify its rotten rating.
