10 Good Horror Movies With Surprisingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Scores

5. House On Haunted Hill - RT Score: 31%

deep rising
Warner Bros.

Much like Thirteen Ghosts, the 1999 remake of House on Haunted Hill was done downright dirty by critics and audiences alike.

Five complete strangers are invited to a birthday party at a supposedly haunted house. Any who manage to stay the night will find themselves rewarded with a million dollars, that is of course if they can survive until morning.

House on Haunted Hill is far from masterpiece status, but that's not what it's going for. The movie aims to tell a fun, creepy haunted house story, and does just that by creating a vibe that feels as though you're walking through a horror house at a carnival. Where it works best though is not in its spookiness, but surprisingly in its characters, primarily those of the Prices.

The marriage between Mr. and Mrs. Price is one of the most adversarial relationships in horror. You'll find yourself asking why they're even married or how their marriage could possibly have come as far as it did. Do they love each other? Hate each other? A bit of both? It's never made exactly clear, and that's what makes seeing the two interact such a strange joy to watch. The two of them alone are worth bumping up this one's score.
