The Movie: George A. Romero's third zombie film really should've been his last, rounding off a trilogy preceded by the excellent Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. Whereas the latter was a satire on the soulless nature of materialistic consumerism, Day of the Dead sees the zombie apocalypse in its final stages, where the last remnants of mankind are consigned to a military bunker. The arrogance and folly of militarism is the target here, as the army squabble with a team of scientists as the world around them collapses. This is Romero at his best, and Day of the Dead is the director's personal favourite. The Gory Death: Captain Rhodes desperately runs away from "tame" zombie Bub, who is out for revenge after watching Rhodes shoot the scientist who's been helping him recover his humanity. After shooting and wounding Rhodes, he stumbles through a doorway and is immediately surrounded by a swarm of zombies who proceed to rip him apart, tearing his stomach open and dragging away his legs. Still, as much of a bastard as Rhodes is, you can't help but admire him for telling them to "Choke on 'em!" with his final breath. What are your favourite gory death scenes in movie history?
